This will be the most personal post I’ve ever written on this website.
You’ve probably seen the picture of a Border Collie on some of my books. That’s Cash. And, unfortunately, he is no longer with me. The last two years have been difficult. His health started getting worse, and it took the vets way too long to figure out that it was cancer all along.
I travelled to South Africa in December 2013. Incidentally, that was the time when Nelson Mandela died. And then and there, while watching the ceremony in his honor, I learned that when a person dies, African tribes celebrate the person’s life instead of mourning their death.
The last three weeks have been super hard for me, but, at this moment, I would like to share with you some of the moments of Cash’s life and to celebrate them one more time. That’s why I have prepared this video. It’s only a glimpse at things that Cash and I, and others who loved him, have done together.
Cash was the best person I’ve ever known. I’ve never loved anyone the way I loved him.
Cash passed away on April 26, 2026 in Funchal, Madeira. He was 8 years and 10 months old.
He has been immortalized on the covers of my books. And now also as the avatar of my pub quiz Team Cash here in Madeira.
And, going forward, I will try to make him the most well-known dog by creating even more things with his image. Stay tuned.
I am not religious, so I will not say any words directed to him, because he is no longer there.
