Breath: The New Science of a Lost Art – A Book That Might Change Your Life

Hey there, this is a first for me! I’m not here to talk about puzzles or my books. Today, we’re diving into something completely different, but I promise it’s worth your time.

I’m only halfway through “Breath: The New Science of a Lost Art” by James Nestor, and I’m already convinced it’s one of the most important books I’ve read in a while. It’s not often that I feel compelled to write about a book before even finishing it, but this one’s special.

Now, you might be thinking, “A book about breathing? Really?” But trust me, this isn’t your average health guide. It’s a deep dive into something we all do constantly but rarely think about.

If what Nestor claims is true (and he’s done an impressive amount of research to back it up), this book could be the answer to a surprising number of health issues. We’re talking about asthma, hypertension, menstrual pain, erectile dysfunction, even osteoporosis, and your general health and well-being. It’s pretty amazing how something as simple as breathing can affect so many aspects of our health.

The author doesn’t just present theories – he’s put them to the test himself. He’s experimented with various breathing techniques, documenting the effects on his own body. It’s this hands-on approach that makes the book particularly compelling.

One of the interesting things you’ll learn is that the number 5.5 is apparently crucial when it comes to optimal breathing. You’ll also pick up some practical breathwork techniques that you can start using right away. Surprisingly, you’ll discover why carbon dioxide, often thought of as the “bad guy” in breathing, is actually beneficial for us in certain ways.

I should mention that this isn’t my first encounter with Nestor’s work. I’ve also read his book “Deep” about freediving, which inspired me to take up the sport myself. It’s become my favorite activity here in Madeira, and I’ve found there’s a fascinating connection between the breathing techniques discussed in “Breath” and the practice of holding your breath while freediving. Both activities require a deep understanding of how our bodies interact with oxygen and carbon dioxide.

Another great aspect of this book is its relevance for athletes, particularly long-distance runners. The breathing techniques and insights shared can be incredibly useful for improving endurance and performance in various sports.

I genuinely think this book should be widely read. It’s relevant for parents, teenagers, doctors, athletes – pretty much everyone. The information in it has the potential to improve quality of life in simple, accessible ways.

So, if you’re looking for a book that might actually make a difference in your day-to-day life, give this one a shot. Your body might thank you for it. Who knows, you might even breathe a sigh of relief at how much better you feel!

Yours truly,
Djape

P.S. This post marks a new direction for my website. While I’ll continue to write about puzzles and books, I’m expanding into other topics that interest me. You can expect to see posts on personal subjects, general musings, and even my thoughts on philosophy, including politics and religion. I know not everyone will agree with everything I write, and that’s okay. I’m not here to please everyone; I’m here to share my thoughts and experiences. Some of you might not like this new direction, but hey, that’s the beauty of having your own website – you get to call the shots. So buckle up, it’s going to be an interesting ride!
